Hamas was founded on December 10, 1987, as an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Its ideology is rooted in Palestinian nationalism and Islamic fundamentalism, emphasizing the importance of jihad (holy struggle) and martyrdom in the struggle against Israeli occupation. Hamas has a political wing, led by the Chairman of the Political Bureau, and a military wing, known as the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. The organization is headquartered in Gaza City, Gaza Strip, since winning the Palestinian legislative election in 2006. Hamas and Israel have engaged in protracted armed conflict, with key issues including the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the status of Jerusalem, Israeli settlements, demarcation of borders, water rights, and Palestinian freedom of movement & right of return. Since the October 7th attack, they have been in full-scale war.
