Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei is the unelected authoritarian Supreme Leader of Iran. He is Iran’s head of state, commander-in-chief of its armed forces, and exercises near-absolute authority over the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of Iran’s government. Ruling since 1981, he is the longest-serving leader in the Muslim world. A hardline Shia-Muslim fanatic, Khamenei has repeatedly and explicitly called for the end of the Jewish state. And in April 2024, he launched a military strike of 170 drones, over 30 cruise missiles, and more than 120 ballistic missiles toward Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. And in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh on July 31, 2024, Khamenei has vowed further retaliation, with direct military strikes against Israel in the region widely expected to occur again. Khamenei has also been relentlessly pushing forward, in defiance of US-led international sanctions, a nuclear weapons program. Iran acquiring nuclear weapons would severely destabilize the balance of power in the region and would motivate their Gulf Arab rivals to acquire nuclear weapons of their own, placing global peace into serious jeopardy.
