Charlie and Rip

A pig named Charlie Bacon and a Great Pyrenees dog named Rip were best friends living on a small farm in Virginia. When Charlie escaped from the farm, Rip followed him because he was protective and considered Charlie part of his “herd.” The two animals wandered away several times, and neighbors, police, and animal-control officers organized a search. People were repeatedly warned not to chase them, because the animals were frightened and would run farther away. Eventually, police managed to catch Charlie, but Rip kept running, apparently continuing to look for the pig. Shortly afterward, Rip was found near a road and had been hit by a vehicle. He died from the incident. Charlie was taken home and kept inside while the fence was repaired. His owner said Rip had been doing his job protecting Charlie until the very end.
