In late 2013, right as Doge was taking over the internet, 4chan’s /s4s/ started pushing this seal/walrus character called "Walruse". One archived thread literally declares: “walruse is the current #1 meme.” This wasn’t happening years later either — it was happening at the absolute peak of Doge mania. On Reddit, people coming from 4chan were already posting “walruse > doge,” while others complained Doge had become overused and too mainstream. Walruse also had its own meme language. The joke was that “Walruse” = “what a ruse,” so when someone got tricked they had been “walrused.” People immediately started making variations, reaction images and even asking for “moar” Walruse content. Doge became one of the biggest memes ever. Walruse became the forgotten challenger that now gets to relive in glory.
